Toys or Treats to Train My Dog?
69
Puppy and dog training can be difficult for some pet owners, and others may disagree. But there are some occasions where a pet owner believes they will have no problem training their dog or puppy. Until they purchase a dog that is way to difficult to handle. Being a at home dog breeder and trainer, I have had occasions where I had a dog or two that just would not listen.
There are many ways a pet owner may train their dog or puppy. One could be spending a lot of money on a professional dog trainer, or buying books, DVDs, and other merchandise.
Face it! Who knows your dog the best? ...well hopefully it is you and it should be if he or she isn't.
First Step is to get to know your dog. You may of already succeeded this step. Find out what your dog loves. Introduce your dog to toys, and things he may enjoy playing with. A dog without toys tend to get bored, and sometimes will claim other objects as their toys. Like your favorite shoes! But if you have a dog that doesn't like toys, no worries. Food might be an option.
Some dog trainers will tell you to use treats or food. My first approach is to find two toys your dog really likes. Maybe a ball, chew toy, or something. The second option is food or treats, normally only if the dog doesn't enjoy toys.
Toy Method
When training with toys, it is better to have two toys. When you begin training, remember to be in a solitary area with no distractions for the dog to loose focus on you and their toys that you will be holding. If you have a dog that will not stay by your side, leash sometimes helps.
Here is the simple part, when you command your dog to do something. Once your dog gets it down, reward him with one toy. Let them chew on it for a second or two, and remember to praise your dog with a kind voice. Some dogs are sensitive to tones of voices, so make sure you do not frighten them. Especially if they are a puppy and new to things.
After the dog enjoys their toy for a second or two. How do I get the dog to pay attention to me again? Easy, that is what your second toy is for. Show your dog the toy, and usually they forget about the one you just gave them. Once they have dropped the first toy, pick it up without giving the second toy up.
This method does not work for all dogs, but sometimes it is a lot better to use toys for dogs who just think their toys are irresistible.

Treat Method
If you have a dog that doesn't like toys, then treats might be your answer. First step is finding a treat your dog enjoys, sometimes pet owners will buy treats and their dogs don't even like them. I know I have, and I also have had a dog that wouldn't even eat his dog food until he was hungry enough. He was really finicky. When I trained him, I cooked grilled chicken for him. I am not saying to make your dog a gourmet meal, but to be able to train a dog with food. It must be something he enjoys or he will not be interested in what your trying to train him. And make sure not to give your dog anything to eat that may harm him.
When you have found a treat or food your dog enjoys, and cannot get enough of, then your ready to start training your dog. Some treats might be big enough to break into small kibble bites. This is extremely helpful because it puts more training in, and the dog doesn't get too full too quick. And some pet owners might have a obese dog, or might be afraid of making their dog overweight. So breaking up your dog's treats is very helpful.
Some pet owners could use your dog's dog food kibble. Some dogs love their dog food better then treats, and plus it is already in small bites.
