Is a Rottweiler Right for Me?
69Who knows?
Lets find out!
So you are interested in getting a Rottweiler, and learning more about the breed. Well this should help.
According to American Kennel Club Rottweilers ranked 13 in 2009, 14 in 2008, 16 in 2004, 8 in 1999, and I believe 2 in 1998.
History
The date of origin of the Rottweiler is really unknown, but considered ancient times.
The Rottweiler's function is known to be Roman drover dogs. They were responsible for guarding herds of cattle for Roman troops when they did marches. It is said that they marched to Germany, and the Roman troops and their dogs settled. The town that they settled in was soon to be known as Rottweil, where cattle overtime became very important. Later on cattle driving became outlawed. Instead of using Rottweilers as cart pulling dogs, they started replacing them with donkeys, and then the railroad was produced.
The number of Rottweilers decreased, and was nearly lost. Due to the decline of Rottweilers, people who loved the breed formed a club in 1901 to make sure it wasn't lost. Even though the club didn't last long it still helped out the breed standard. Two more clubs started taking an interest in the breed in 1907, one club allowing the breed to become a police dog. The clubs got together in the year 1921, and by the 1930s it was recognized in the American Kennel Club.
Today's function for the Rottweiler is used in security purposes, as well as herding trails, police dogs, or simply a loving pet and member of a family.
Health, Temperament, and Upkeep
A male can weigh about 85-135 pounds, and a female about 80-100 pounds.
A male height is about 24-27 inches, and a female is about 22-25 inches.
The Rottweiler is known for his protection abilities. They are powerful dogs and very intelligent. Rottweilers also love their owners who give them the care and love they deserve. They may act hyper in some situations, but that usually tells you how much they really appreciate you. They are great dogs for security purposes, as well as a police dog, herding dog, and sometimes even a therapy dog.
Though Rottweilers maybe aggressive to new people that come around, so be cautious and give them a proper introduction. Socializing your Rottweiler is very important, with the lack of this may cause a bad dog. And it isn't their fault, but yours. Taking consideration of this breed, obedience training is also very important.
Colors and Disqualifications
Colors: black with tan markings.
Disqualifications: overshot or undershot, having two or more teeth missing, having a long coat, colors not the standard color and color markings, and of course attacking any person while in the judging ring.
Overall take the considerations of the breed before you tend to purchase one. I believe they are excellent dogs. I have family who have had Rottweilers and they were great. They are very good guard dogs, and with some training they can be the best dog you ever owned.

I had a rottie/shepherd mix for many years until he passed away a year ago. He was about 15 yrs old! He was an amazing dog...VERY smart, very loyal, very gentle, as perfect as can be. He and my toddler were best of friends during his last couple years of life. They do have Rottweiler rescues where people can adopt one of any age and many animal shelters also have rotties to adopt.
